Crazy Block Cheesecakes
Contrary to its name, Crazy Block Cheesecakes in Oakland, opened in March 2025, has more than cheesecakes. It is also famous for its brisket (available in a sandwich on Grand Bakery challah) and crispy, dense latkes, though they have a rotating menu of 160 flavors of New York-style cheesecake. Writing about the owner and Bay Area native, Ben Block, The J says: “[h]e sees himself as somewhat of a latke ambassador for customers who haven’t tried them before. Talking about latkes is something he just loves to do.”
Beyond their brick-and-mortar restaurant, their items can also be found at Aburaya Japanese Fried Chicken, Berkeley Bowl, and Berkeley Bowl West–all in Berkeley–as well as at Hops & Beans Cafe in Fremont.
