Yiddish Language and Culture – Informal Learning

Yidish un Yidishkayt, an informal Yiddish language and culture class/group for participants at any skill level, meets usually the first Thursday of the month at 7:30pm. Suspended during pandemic.

Our monthly Yiddish class explores the language and culture of Ashkenazic Jews. It has some nostalgia, but includes modern insights from the 20th and 21st centuries. We have fun as we learn and discuss Yiddish songs, poems and stories. We study the Jewish experience not only in the Ashkenazic regions (northern and eastern Europe), but also the immigrant experiences of Jews in America and elsewhere. There is no prerequisite or need to know any Yiddish in advance. However, some students remember some Yiddish from their childhood. If so, we try to build on that knowledge, but we never move ahead until each student understands every word.
