In the early decades of the twentieth century, Yiddish literature for children was published on four continents, reaching readers with diverse ideological commitments and aesthetic preferences. Now, for the first time, a compendium of these stories—illuminated by original and new illustrations—is available to English-language readers. Join editor and translator Miriam Udel for a tour of her anthology and the not-quite-lost Yiddish civilization it helps to restore. Miriam Udel is associate professor of Yiddish language, literature, and culture at Emory University. She holds an A.B. in Near Eastern languages and civilizations from Harvard University, as well as a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the same institution. She was ordained in 2019 at Yeshivat Maharat in a program designed to bring qualified mid-career women into the Orthodox rabbinate. She is the author of Never Better!: The Modern Jewish Picaresque (University of Michigan Press, 2016).
