Jewish Argentina has a unique Jewish musical heritage. In this session, Yiddish singer Zulema Benveniste (Buenos Aires) and fiddler Ilana Cravitz (London) present first findings from their research into the history of Yiddish music & song in Argentina:
• Ilana traces a ‘batir di palmas’ (patsh tants) that has enjoyed unbroken popularity in Argentina through to the 21st century.
• Zulema introduces us to Castídish, a fascinating Argentinian linguistic creation which combines Spanish (Castellano) and Yiddish. She’ll present songs with Castídish lyrics from the 1930-50s.
The session will be in English and Spanish with translation as necessary.
The event is presented by LIKE, The London International Klezmer Experience.
