Lecture 14 of The Promiscuous World of Jewish Music Series, presented by Joshua Horowitz
Is Majufes – that cornerstone of the klezmer repertoire – also its most notorious problem child? Join Bret Werb for a tour through the maze of Majufes, from its origins in traditional prayer, to its transformation into a caricature of Jewishness that delighted generations of Polish gentlefolk, to more recent manifestations of varying degrees of malevolence. The topic will be explored by way of an array of recordings, archival manuscripts and printed scores, illustrative ephemera, and (it is hoped) a live performance. Disclaimer: Politically correct pundits may want to bring blinders. You may never again want to play this tune after you hear this lecture. Bret Werb is the long-serving musicologist at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
