Women of the Yiddish Stage, with Amanda (Miryem-Khaye) Seigel

Women have participated in the Yiddish theater from its first days, yet the majority of Yiddish theater scholarship neither addresses gender nor adequately represents women’s achievements in the field. Women on the Yiddish Stage is a series of publications that amplifies the voices of women who served as creative leaders in the historical Yiddish theater. Amanda (Miryem Khaye) Seigel will present on primary sources by Yiddish women actors, translated and published in English for the first time, and articles by scholars reflecting on those incredible women and stories that shaped Yiddish theater’s development.

Amanda (Miryem-Khaye) Seigel is a Yiddish singer and scholar in Yiddish music and culture who “exemplifies the attempt to bring a centuries-old language and culture into the contemporary world” (New York Times). Her album Toyznt tamen = A thousand flavors was released in 2015. She is co-editor (with Alyssa Quint) of Women on the Yiddish Stage (Legenda, 2022) and a member of the Digital Yiddish Theatre Project. For her research project The Broder Singers: Forerunners of the Yiddish Theater, Siegel received YIVO’s Joseph Kremen Memorial Fellowship.
