Workshop: Yiddish Song Smuggling, with Daniel Kahn

Friday, November 6, 11:00 AM
SFJCC, 3200 California Street, San Francisco

What happens when a song crosses a border – from one language, culture or musical tradition into another?

Detroit-born, Hamburg-based troubadour and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Kahn leads a workshop exploring the art of Yiddish “song smuggling,” with a focus on polyglot performance, traditional subversion, tradaptation (translation + adaptation), multi-musical mixology and other modes of border-crossing in modern Yiddish song work.

Bring your voice, your languages and your mind – and come ready to experiment. This workshop is for singers, musicians and the polyglot-curious.

Space is limited and advance registration is required.

Presented as part of the SF Leonard Cohen Festival and in partnership with KlezCalifornia.
