Jewish musicians were an important part of Argentina’s emerging arts scene in the 1940s and 50s, making their mark in theatre, radio, television, the concert hall, and on disc. The Instituto “Zimra” was established to promote Jewish culture, putting on concerts and even establishing a record label. Set up by Jewish immigrant Iedidio Efron, a pillar of the community, it attracted some of the country’s most famous jazz, tango and film performers & composers to a place where they could express their Jewish identity. Zulema Benveniste (Buenos Aires) and Ilana Cravitz (London) have been exploring this fascinating story, and will share some of their findings, illustrating the journey with recordings, family photos and glimpses of threads that cross the globe. They will be assisted with translation by Juan Grabina and Eleanor Levin.
