Jewish Arts & Bookfest

In celebration of Jewish American Heritage Month, the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life will host its first Jewish Arts & Bookfest. on Sunday, May 4, 2025 from 11am to 4pm. In the Magnes tradition of incubating Jewish cultural events, the Arts & Bookfest will bring together authors and artists such as Daniel Handler (A.K.A. Lemony Snicket), Adam Mansbach, Marcia Falk, and Josh Tuininga, a reading by the Yiddish Theatre Ensemble, and presentations on topics including Jewish motherhood, Russian Jewish Literature, and a special session with Jeff Morgan of Covenant Wines discussing their cookbook “Food and Wine: A Jewish Journey.”

Yiddish Theatre Ensemble, a fiscally-sponsored project of KlezCalifornia, will present “Jewish Women Writers of Argentina.” Argentina has a large Jewish population and has played a major role in El Boom, the renaissance of literature that has taken place in recent decades in Latin America. Several outstanding writers of that flowering have been women authors in Argentina: Liliana Heker, Ana María Shua,, and Irene Gruss. Yiddish Theatre Ensemble will present a dramatic reading and discussion of these great writers, featuring Zack Rogow, Laura Sheppard, and Anne Hallinan. The reading features a very Jewish blend of styles: politically engaged, lyrical, and flat-out hilarious.

TIckets to the Jewish Arts & Bookfest:

Adults: $20
Youth (under 18): $5
Students: $5
Museums for All: $5
