THIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN CANCELLED IN RESPONSE TO THE CORONA VIRUS PANDEMIC.

Once, when Josh Horowitz and the legendary Pete Sokolow taught a class together at KlezKamp, Josh asked Pete to sum up in one sentence his approach to music. His response was, “I’m an expert at faking it.” This workshop presents Josh’s time-tested secret manual for faking it, the idea being, if you know enough of the basic phrases of klezmer, you can apply them even when you don’t know the tune, because they recur over and over again in different pieces. Josh has grouped these into categories and will run through them extensively with participants. He’ll start with beginning and ending phrases, fills and turnarounds and simple chord progressions using the “Simon says” teaching techniques in order to develop a repertoire of responses. This method has been proven effective over the years and is endorsed by the best fakers in the scene.

At Congregation Chochmat HaLev, 2215 Prince St, Berkeley, 94705

A $25 donation is requested for the workshop from everyone in the room. Light snacks are provided. To reserve a space, RSVP to workshops@klezcalifornia.org. For general info on KlezCalifornia workshops, click on More Info, below.
